For Something Different...
Barbecue!

Big Nate's Barbeque
The one dish to try here is the Memphis pork, especially in the classic hamburger-bun sandwich. The slow-cooked, torn-apart pig meat is tender and luscious, and Nate's rather sweet, simple sauce is authentic for this dish. The coleslaw is divine too, crisp and naturally sweetened with raisins and carrot slivers.
1665 Folsom (at 12th St), 861-4242

Brother-in-Laws Barbeque
The most popular "Q" place in town (it's takeout only) always has a long line at the counter and tailgate parties in the parking lot. The brisket is tops - amazingly tender and smoky all through - and the chicken and links are grand. Garlicky spaghetti and thick barbecue beans are especially fine sides.
705 Divisadero (at Grove), 931-7427

Leon's Bar-B-Q
At Leon's you can eat in comfortably, or take out, and it costs almost nothing to survey the cooking -- a $5 sampler plate offers ribs, chicken, links, jambalaya, and a pair of scrumptious corn muffins. The moist chicken drumettes carry the flavor of a delicious marinade and Leon's Louisiana-style links are infernally spicy. The sweetish sauce achieves its best balance in the easily handled "spicy" version. The good soupy beans are worth trying, too.
